About Us

In the early 1950’s, there were 4 small towns in Southeast Alabama, in Geneva County, who set out to bring natural gas to their county. The towns, Geneva, Hartford, Samson, and Slocomb all being municipalities, joined together to form what is known today as the Geneva County Gas District, with the main office in Geneva, Alabama.  In March 1955, they were granted certification from the state to be incorporated.

By 1963, the work had been done.  The system had 116 miles of gas pipeline, with the gas main line tying into Florida Gas, south of I -10, with 25 miles of gas pipeline in Florida running north to Geneva.  After reaching Geneva, the pipeline went east and west to provide natural gas to the towns of Samson, Hartford, and Slocomb.  Patterson Wilder Construction Company built the system, with Goodwin Engineers Inc. designing it.

1963 – Open for business. The gas started flowing. George Sims was the first manager. In 1966, Geneva County Gas District joined the Alabama Natural Gas Association (ANGA) where George served on the first board of directors with ANGA and later in 1971, serving as President.

1989 – The Geneva County Gas District had met its goal, it had paid off its creditors and belongs to the citizens of Geneva County.

2000
– Geneva County was badly affected by the closing of all textile businesses and cotton mills.  Many people lost their jobs and had to move away.  This loss impacted the Gas District, but, we found a way to continue to grow.

2020
Geneva County Gas District and Southeast Gas District joined teams, allowing Geneva County Gas District to connect pipelines and purchase gas from Southeast Gas.  So, both Gas Districts began working on building an 8 mile section of pipeline from Slocomb to Rehobeth, Alabama and another 6 miles from Rehobeth to Dothan, Alabama.

2021
– October – The Geneva County Gas District and Southeast Gas District opened the valves and let the gas flow…..  Two Municipal gas districts working together.

2023
